While doing a migration of a large batch of files from a network share (Novell, not AD, for what it's worth...don't laugh) a large number of files failed because presumably their directory path + file name was too long. One example would be a file with a name of 95 characters, file name+Directory being 357 characters. Similar files in the same folder did successfully migrate with slightly shorter names (80 characters).
This document notes that the file name restriction for SPO should be 400 characters, so I'd think that those files would have squeezed in (why these files have such long names...don't ask me). When trying to rename the files, connecting into the Novell drive through Windows 8.1, when I attempt to rename the file I receive an error 'The file name you specified is not valid or too long', even if I try to change it to a single-character name.
Okay, phew. Now I could go in and re-name these files through command prompt and try to individually copy them over, but there are about 300 in total so that's not really an option. I also don't really want to blindly do some sort of substring function where I'd blindly cut off the last X characters, because some of the files are similarly named and would end up with identical names in that case.
Has anyone ever run into an issue like this? Is there a reasonable solution beyond renaming these individually? I'd prefer to not go back to the department these belong to and tell them that they have to handle these after I already told them they'd move. Thanks in advance!
